Social Media Questions To Ask Yourself

Social Media is a major asset in the world today but it is also a major curse in the world today. In order to keep up with the world today you have to be technological savvy which is understandable, but there are still rights and wrongs for using social media, especially Facebook and Twitter.

The next time you get a chance to get on your social media website, I challenge you to ask yourself a few questions and see if you pass the test. The questions that follow this paragraph are simple but effective and they also are the same questions employers follow to hire their employees.

    Questions
    1. Do I have inappropriate photos.
    2. Are their comments from friends that are vulgar or include swearing.
    3. Is there content about drinking
    4. Is there content about illegal drugs
    5. Are there negative comments about previous employers
    6. Are there discriminatory comments about people or organizations
    7. Lies about qualifications
    8. Is there confidential information from friends or employers

Ask yourself these questions and if you answer yes to any of the following, ask yourself how you can fix it and how you can you prevent it from happening again. An important thing to remember is that once it is on the internet, it is there forever. Employers are viewing Facebook and Twitter profiles more than ever to figure out what type of people they are bringing into their business. Make sure you take the right steps to brand yourself positively.

    One Word For 2012

Choosing a word for the year 2012 was a difficult task, but it allowed me to lay focus to different goals that I have set for myself.  Some of the words that did cross my mind were “Focus” and “Lead” and those two really suit me well, but I found a word that fits me even more. “Brand” a word that stuck out to me for the year 2012.

The American Marketing Association defines the word Brand as a “Name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller’s good or service as distinct from those of other sellers.”

Brand is the word that I selected for the new year. I chose this because I thought about some of the goals that I have set for myself, both short and long term.  I noticed that in order to make a good impression in the business world  you have to market yourself appropriately which also means branding yourself.  I was able to evaluate myself and work on my overall brand. I thought about past experiences and the things that really make me who I am.  I figured that I have started to make a name for myself but it is not quite where I want it to be.  Branding myself will give me the capabilities of getting out into the world and introducing myself to different people and learning different.  One of the biggest goals that I have set for myself is to focus on the detail of things.  Sometimes we look at something and see the big picture but don’t take the time to look at what makes the picture work.  Minor details can make or break an event, idea or even a proposal.  One question I have asked myself is, “How can I not only make this experience better, but how can it make me better as well?” I have realized that sometime failure is the best success.  What I mean is because you have failed numerous times at one task it has made you realize how to pay attention to every aspect of the job and succeed, and doing it without giving up.

I understand that branding myself will come as a challenge, but it is one that I am ready to take.  We all travel this long road called life, but it depends on you to decide your destination.  Branding with social media is one thing that I am already starting to implement.  Using social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, WordPress, and LinkedIn are all ways to improve my marketability.  Twitter and Facebook are two big sites that can make or break anyone just by the things that are posted on the site.  That is why in college it is very important to pay attention to the things that are said or posted on your accounts.  LinkedIn is a great social media site to use to brand yourself; LinkedIn is a professional network that allows you to connect to individuals that are in your profession or that have attended the same educational venue that you received your education from.  The key is to keep your LinkedIn profile updated and make sure to join groups that are in your  field of study.  Wordpress is a new site that I am using which allows me to express thoughts through words.  Having a blog is an important tool in the branding and it also helps in developing writing and thinking skills.

I thought long and hard for other reason why the word brand would be the best fit for 2012 and I realize that, we brand ourselves everyday rather we like it or not just by the things we do.  So choosing the word brand is a way for me to work on myself and make myself a better person than I was in 2011.  In a business the key is to build brand equity, which is making your product known to the customers and consumers to deliver. That is my goal, to let people know that when I am called on for a job I will deliver and that I will give 100% effort in what I am doing.  We have to remember that perception is reality and once a person states that you are not a hard worker and can’t get things done, people will believe what is being said and might not put the same amount of trust in you.  I want to a go-to person, someone who will give you the results that you are looking for.

Brand not just the word for 2012 but for life.

    Is Social Media Important?

Social Media Platforms are websites such as: twitter, facebook, Linkedin, Myspace, etc. Some of these platforms are used on a daily basis to inform people of things that are happening in the world while others are used on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis.

Social Media Platforms are very important in today’s society due to the fact that technology is at an all time high. One big reason for the increase in the use of social media platforms is the creation of Smartphones (iPhone, Android, etc.). These phones make it easier to check our platforms such as Twitter and Facebook because it is as easy as clicking on the application that is on our phone. Even Fortune 500 Companies are using these platforms to inform customers and consumers about products coming soon to stores and even eCoupons to allow their customers to use in the store to buy their products. We are seeing the evolution of advertising and marketing right before our eyes.

In a society that is starting to be a strong advocate for going green social media is a great way to do it. By stating news in tweets and facebook updates it allows different companies and organizations to broadcast their news quickly and sufficiently without having to pay for paper cost, which also cuts down on the amount of money spent for advertisements. Some people might state that social media is a phase that we as people are going through, but I believe that not only is it going to remain, it will become a larger market in the future.

    Social Media: Branding Yourself

Facebook and Twitter are taking over the social media world by storm, and these two social media platforms are very important in using to your advantage. Facebook is a great way to show your communication and writing skills. When you create a note or an event, focus on the description and the details, it shows your attention to detail. The biggest thing on Facebook is watching the language and photos that you post on the website. Remember once it is on the Internet it is there forever. Facebook is a great tool if you are in the Mass Communications or Journalism departments it is your perfect chance to show your skills to the public eye.

Twitter is very important way to brand yourself. This is a way to show people your versatility in discussion topics and your communication skills. Be careful how you say certain things because people have been let go from their place of employment because of things said on their twitter account.

LinkedIn a professional network that is online is a great way to brand and market yourself online. LinkedIn gives you the chance to place a resume’ on your profile to show your experience as well as your skills in particular areas.

When you are doing any type of work that involves writing, designing, advertising, or anything that is tangible make a portfolio for yourself. It’s one thing to tell people that you can do certain task but when you can actually show a visual to a person it strengthens your creditability. Also look into making a ePortfolio for yourself, there are websites that provide free web hosting. (wix.com, webs.com)

Blog sites are also an important way to brand yourself by showing not only your experience but your writing skills. Writing skills are important in the business world especially when writing proposals, memo, and itineraries. During my time as an executive board member of the Association of Campus Entertainment I have had to write proposals and itineraries to turn in to the president and advisor.

One thing that stuck out to me is a flyer I read at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke that was promoting the Career Center and it stated

Google yourself, do you like he things that you seel

Once seeing that I did the test I liked what I saw but did not like the limited number of links, and that motivates me to get more involved in activities on campus.
